Remmie Rescued
Remmie is a 3-4 month old male Chow pup. He's very healthy - shiny black fur - well socialized, affectionate, loves playing with my Lucy and Caramel. There is no aggressive play on his part - no food aggression either. The pup's owner left him with the girl friend when they split and never came back for him so the girl friend had AC pick up Remmie. Lucky day for this dog!!! He needs a rescue if you can find one.

Conrad Shy, sweet boy RESCUED
Although accepted for rescue, this dog is available to go to another rescue group asap if they would have room sooner.
Conrad was my pick of the weekend. I loved this great dog. While Conrad really tried his best to pose for the camera, the reality was that he was so intent on clinging and walking right next to me that photography was a real challenge. This big love bug stole my heart! He was incredibly attentive, loving and would roll over on his back at the drop of a hat. Great with other dogs (no cats please!), this easy going fellow was a total gentleman on the leash and I so hated to return him to his kennel. Don't let this super pet slip through the cracks. Open your doors to him.

This is "McGowan" whose fortunes turned 180-degrees when a kind hearted soul by the same name, intercepted her in her misery. McGowan was owned by a family who did not see the need to send her to the veterinarian's after her leg was broken. For 2 days she dragged around a dangling leg - obviously in much pain. It was her lucky day when a kind hearted soul working in a nearby house, saw her, and scooped her up to bring her to us. After her owners signed her over to us, we sent her to the veterinarians for much needed care. Her leg is mending while she resides in a temporary foster home with another good hearted soul. McGowan needs a permanent home where she will be loved and treasured for the excellent family member she so desperately wants to be. She will have to come back to the shelter soon if no rescue or permanent home is found.

Teddy - Collie-Chow Mix Rescued
Someone did a superior job in naming this fabulous pet! Teddy does more than live up to his name. This huge poof of reddish/tan fur is fun and love central. Wanting nothing more than to nuzzle his whole head in your lap like a Teddy Bear, this is one dog you cannot possible resist!! So very affectionate and eager to please you, Teddy shames other pets who may call themselves "social and people-oriented." Teddy takes his role as family pet very seriously (as he grins a huge grin) and will not dare disappoint.
Please help him get on his way to a good rescue. He looks like a Collie-Chow mix, a great family dog mix-loyal and attached to his family and home. Why was he surrendered?? Teddy does not walk well on leash, well, maybe nobody ever took him for a leash walk. Now he has heart worms. Who will rescue a dog who is hw positive? very attentive, people-oriented gal. Super with other dogs (and ok with cats)
and willing to share her living quarters with just about any dog in need, she is

A volunteer identified April as having a “high love potential,” and I believe her. April is a super, super sweet, gentle lady who is a little timid here at the shelter. She is a calm, easy walker who focuses more on you than on the walk. You have to love this about her! April has deep, expressive dark brown eyes which draw you in and keep you! While suffering from an old but now being treated front foot wound, Dallas is the epitomy of a stoic soul who exudes an unbelieveable quiet dignity. While walking him, he was so focused on making sure I was having a good time. He was so eager to stop and give me gentle face kisses and hug my legs. Here's another heartbreaker. Elaida is a 3-4 yr old gal who is terrified at our shelter. Clearly someone's pet in the past, she is now at a total loss here at the shelter. While she is ok sharing her kennel with other dogs, in entering her kennel she gets nervous and does her best to poke her nose in the deep dark corner of her kennel. She is terrific at avoiding eye contact and keeps her paws crossed hoping you do not notice her. She will let you pick her up and and after a few minutes she will start to relax...a bit. Weighing in at maybe 20lbs, this girl is hoping a kind, patient family will cut her the slack she needs. She has the potential to be a great pet but for now she is having a tough time showing her abilities.

Lucy Adopted
Lucy was found in the swamp surrounding the shelter - she was slowly walking along the exterior fence of the shelter trying to find a way INTO the shelter. Wednesday is typically euthanasia day at the shelter, which made it even more poignant that this poor suffering girl was trying to get inside the fence - to reach people and to get some help. Lucy is an older female St. Bernard mix, who has been well fed, but neglected in other ways. Lucy was matted to the skin and suffering from a terrible bacterial and yeast skin infection. Her stinking wet mats of fur were shaved off and she was bathed with an antifungal shampoo. She has been started on antibiotics to help with her skin infection. She is HW NEGATIVE, remarkably enough. She is calm, gentle, and paws you for attention and petting. She is a gentle old girl who needs a break. She has been fully sponsored for her basic vetting!!

Sweet as pie and such a huge love bug...that is me!! When I first arrived at the shelter, you should have seen me. My head was stuck to my kennel floor and there was a slim chance that you could catch a glimpse of my fabulous tail as it was hidden between my legs. I have made a 360 in my behavior and now I am the first one to meet and greet you in my kennel. The competition is stiff in my kennel as I have 3 ...yes 3...other blonde dogs all vieing for your attention when you stop by for a visit! I usually win the "game" as I am quick on my feet, present my red bootied foot to you (it has a cut so it is encased in an anti-biotic sock) and promptly climb into your lap. The kissing begins and the rest is history. I am a gentle, very affectionate, patient girl who is cool with cats and walks great on a leash. Now that I am comfortable in my new temporary home, you can count on finding me with a huge smile on my face and a tail that jiggles with excitement. Hope you pick me for your home soon!

Update: Megan continues to do a great job in pulling on our heartstrings. Megan who is extremely shy and rooming with two other cuties, was brave enough to venture outside of her kennel over the weekend. With her tail tightly tucked she slowly exited her kennel (this was big!!!) and hung out with some volunteers in a cool, shady spot. Megan gently climbed into our laps and let us love on her. No longer as "stiff" and "statue-like" when she first came in, Megan is making an effort and we can all see it. She has such a huge love potential and with time she will be sharing it full force. Let it be with you!
Megan is doing her best to settle into her new home here at the shelter with two other dogs. Brought in by animal control she was terrified when she first came in. Volunteers are working with this girl and already her tail is starting to wag and we think we might have seen her sneak a smile at us!

By now you might have thought I would have relaxed a bit here at the shelter. As you can see in my new pictures, I am still not "getting" this whole shelter experience and it frightens me. My new friend had no problem scooping me out of my igloo and bringing me into the office for a change of pace. Even there, you can see hiding underneath the chairs better matches my comfort level. Does this mean I will always be like this? Absolutely not! A quiet, stable environment will do me wonders. As it is, I know my sweet, friendly personality beams right through my quivering coat of fur. I really am a great girl and you could be the perfect one to make me hold my head up high and make my tail wag. It's no fun keeping it tucked between my legs.

Sweet, gentle Piper came in with a simple note on her paperwork, “lactating.” We all hate to think about where her puppies are now as she came in via animal control without them. For now although she does not realize it, she is in a safe spot. She shares her kennel with two other painfully shy girls and the three of them draw strength off one another. Piper poked her head out from her igloo just long enough for her portrait head shot and for me to see her long, lush flowing locks of black fur. With a name like SugarPlum, the expectations have to be high. I must say though,
SugarPlum does not disappoint! This incredibly sweet, patient love bug was so
named as she is as sweet as sugar and yes has a plum on the end of her nose
(don't tell HER this!). This medium sized girl has a fabulous, plush creamy coat
of fur and absolutely loves all over body rubs. A favorite amongst the staff,
SugarPlum will always over deliver and never disappoint. She is a great dog and
will make a wonderful pet.

Havolina Rescued
I was told the other day
that I clean up well. Really well. And in fact I do! But let me explain. You
see, when I arrived at the shelter I was coated with engine oil. The staff
surmizes that my guardians were trying to treat the large hairless spot on my
side. Needless to say the oil only made a huge mess on my otherwise spotless
cream colored jacket of fur. After 3 baths (can you tell I am very patient...I
mean really patient!!), my coat was returned to its full glory. While the oil
was washed away my name sadly stuck! No worries as I know my calm, cool
personality and combatibilty with other dogs and cats, will quickly land me in
my new home.
Havolina is graced with a bobtail and the ability to give very gentle face
kisses!

My name is Joe Don and with a personality as big as mine, one name was simply not enough. I needed two! Like most border collie mixes I have energy, more energy and then even more energy. I try my best to challenge it is a very positive way with my huge tail wags, blinding smiles and overall body wiggles. I currently share my quarters with two other dogs and while I showed no reaction to cats on my walk, my interviewer would caution a new family with cats because of my mix. To say I am friendly is an understatement. To say I am a fun dog is also an understatement. You get the idea!

Goofy 7 months old
He looks like a Plotthound (they can be all black altough most are brindle colored. Plotthounds are highly intelligent, multifunctional - from hunting dog (wolves) to couch potato. The Plotthound is the North Carolina State dog)
Someone did a really super
job naming me. Goofy suits me perfectly because I have long, delicate limbs
which at 7 months of age I have yet to grow into. Couple this with my priceless
smile and you can quickly see how a
“goof” like me can really get the party going in my kennel with my two other
roommates. I am having a blast in my
kennel. I play with my roommates, I greet visitors with huge open paws and I am
the life of the party but you
would never really know that in looking at my pictures. Yep, I was called
“statue dog” the other day as I literally
froze for the camera lady. My surroundings were uncertain and sadly I was not at
my best. I can tell you I was
immensely well behaved and let my new human friend slather me with all kinds of
affection. She told me I was a
very sweet dog with stunning, long velveteen ears and that I had clearly been
cared for and was once an important
part of a family. My tail started to thump and she put me at such ease that soon
my new family would come for me!
